The threat of disease was omnipresent. It killed off settlers or forced them to flee back east all the time. The few people who were not sick were basically they couldn't do anything except care for those who were ill. There was a saying that a pioneer had a wholesome fear of two things, fever, an ague and rattlesnakes. And a second saying suggested just how common it was to get sick. Ah, he ain't sick, he only got the agger.
