The Importance of Understanding the Past Stories in the Vinaya
The Buddha's omniscient knowledge reached into the particularities of human experience by knowing how we get a much more compassionate understanding of human beings. I paid a lot of attention to the narrative context in which Vinaya infractions occur so that they aren't necessarily relevant for the legal decision of culpability. So you could look at Sedina who is the guy who broke the bow of celibacy and basically started the whole need for rules.
