Jeffrey Toobin: There are two very eerily distinct versions of Jefferson that have captivated our historical imagination. Some writers call him the founding gardener who dreamt of a sustainable nation. The second is the infamous slave owner who fathered at least six children with formerly enslaved woman Sally Hemings and did so all while publicly opposing racial mixture of any kind. These two versions of Jefferson have remained conspicuously isolated from one another, writes Toobin. But as I said, they're one and the same.
