The History of the Jesuit Mission in Japan

The jesuits considered buddhism a devilish and atheistic faith. By the 15 fifties, the portuguese were largely confined to the port of hirado in northwestern kushu. The position of the church was badly weakened during this time. It wasn't until 15 61 that the jesuits were able to get things back on track thanks to a street brawl between portugues traders and local japanese over silk prices at a market outside shichiro shrine.
