In both San Francisco and New York, fortune cookies were originally made in japanese bakeries. So the challenge facing Jenni was to tease out exactly what that japanese connection was. She tracked down a researcher who had first noticed them on a trip to new york. Yasuko nakamachi said these kinds of cookie were supposedly a regional speciality. An american is even quoted in one of these back in 18 83 saying they tasted like ginger snaps without the ginger.
