Introduction

In february of 19 76, the president of senegal flew to the caribbean where he visited haiti, guadeloup and martinique. This was a special occasion for a number of reasons, both then and now. The three places that the president visited are all french speaking. As important as their later political careers would be, they are best known among historians of africana thought as founders of the artistic and intellectual movement known as negritude.
