The Politics of Impeachment

The sole authority for impeachment is given to the House of Representatives in the United States Constitution. Conviction on the impeachment is exactly what the Senate says it is. So just because the House votes to impeach doesn't really tell you what the Senate's going to do. Once Nixon found out that he would in fact be impeached and that he would be convicted, he simply resigned.
