A significant number of Indigenous parents willingly took their children to residential schools. Families were deliberately split up inside with brothers and sisters kept as far apart as possible. Unqualified teachers were hired because no one else was willing to brave the Canadian wilderness to work for pitifully low rages at cash-strapped schools. In 1948, a departmental study disclosed that over 40% of the teaching staff had no professional training.
