In the early upper paleolithic, we lived for most of the year as small wandering hunter gatherer bands. Farming hadn't started then, or the management of land hadn't started on a wholesale an scale at that point. The social aspect of our nature is something which is facilitated by this appreciation of our of our self. We were in small, functional units. So was it predominantly the hunter-gatherer communities during this time? Yes.
