The Effects of Imaginary Friends on Children's Development
There is a group of researchers at the University of Oregon, collectively working at a place called the Imagination Research Lab. They study children's creation of imaginary companions and the role they play in social and cognitive development. Some psychologists believe that imaginary friends seem to function as an emotional stand-in or mannequin personality upon which a child could place an uncomfortable or difficult emotion.
