The First Century Jew Asks Why Elijah Must Come First
The disciples had an experience which they interpreted to be the coming of the kingdom of God in Jesus on the top of the mountain. The last prophecy in Malachi 3 said that the prophet Elijah, who in the story never died, would come again right before the Messiah's arrival. Jews in the first century were literally waiting around for Elijah to appear. To this day Orthodox Jews at the Passover open the front door and stand to welcome Elijah into the home, just in case.
