Eleanor came to the story much later. The story was actually Ruby's. I couldn't figure out how to make it a full 90,000 word story. And so working through what motherhood meant for Eleanor, on one hand, it was about having a child. But on the other hand, itwas about keeping her family together and making her mark in a community that did not want her.
