The case for having some kind of unified national system really is made in part by John Jay in Federalist number two. They were very concerned about the rise of political parties that would somehow separate us from each other and cause us to be fighting. Madison piles on in defense of the idea of a union when he writes, quote, among the numerous advantages promised by a well-constructed union,. None deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction.
