The Gulag Archipelago was one of the major forces bringing down the Soviet Union. Solzhenitsyn had a deep conversion, both religiously but intellectually and morally. The novel In the Circle is set in 1952 or so; it's probably his best work to date. His life has been called "the most important book ever written on Russia"
