In 1999, the King family brought and won a civil suit in which the jury agreed that Dr. King's death was the result of a conspiracy by a coffee shop owner named Lloyd Jowers. This ruling prompted the Department of Justice, DOJ, to reopen the case. Riots ensued across the country. A large percentage of the American population today considers US involvement in King's murder to be a kind of open secret.
