The modern day, grifty practice of sowing seeds has suspiciously familiar ties to the Middle Ages practice of selling indulgences. The church's decision to sell indulgences was what inspired Martin Luther to post his 95 theses on that fabled church door in the first place kicking off the Protestant Reformation. I'm more interested in how the money is generated and it doesn't get more unethical of a promise than it does with the prosperity gospel.
