The Proseal LMA vs Endotracheal Tubes Study

The study we're going to look at is a Cochrane Systematic Review that was conducted by Nicholson et al. in 2013. This study was comprised of randomized controlled trials, including patients greater than 16 years of age with BMI's greater than 30 undergoing general anesthesia. The primary outcomes were rates of failed airway device placement, the incidence of hypoxia between induction and full recovery, serious respiratory complications including lower respiratory tract infections within 30 days of anesthesia, rates of pulmonary aspiration, and even mortality within 30 days. Fortunately, the researchers did not identify any cases of pulmonary aspiration of gastric contents, mortality, or serious respiratory complications in either of the two studies included.
