Plain English with Derek Thompson

CHAPTER

When Did It Become So Cool to Hate Famous People?

i was listening to a podcast recently, i think it was colin coward, and you were making a point about the 50 or 60 year history of celebrity in america. And ho made this comment o where he said, in the middle of the twentieth century, celebrities used to be very simply beloved. And somewhere along the way, the concept of the simply and universally beloved celebrity seemed to wither. It became cuoller to hate famous people than to like them. And what does it mean to live in a society where negativity has become high status?
