Semi Conductors and the Field Effect

The main type of transistors that are used in electro electronic devices to day are called mos fets. That's an acronym for metal oxide semi conductor field effect transistors. These days the concept is a bit more complicated at least than this, but it's still useful for us to think about how we have them made. At the base of each transistor is silican dioxide which is deposited on top of some sort of chemical or grownsoing material. On top of that is a thin layer of polysilicon and then another thick layer of silicon-based insulator.
