Mali's Military History
Mali's soldiers wore leather helmets and sometimes iron chain mail imported from arabia. A certain proportion of this army were likely slave soldiers. Most would have been conscripted citizens, but men were also professional soldiers. And maley's army also incorporated specialist fighters from the different territories that made up the empire. Against this force, the small city state of gao would have had little chance.
