"I was five years old. I just had a birthday in November, and my dad actually ended up passing the following January," she says. "The feeling of loss, the feeling of a different kind of loss,. The loss of losing like a friend, like a really close friend." She recalls her mom's emotional state during that time: "She was kind of like a ghost of herself" Her younger sister later told her about being diagnosed with HIV but wouldn't say how long she'd be alive.
