The Power of Fantasy

In 16th century Venice, the reality was one of decline and loss of prestige. The corresponding Fantasy described a sudden recovery of past glories through alchemy. While the reality only got worse, the Venetians inhabited a happy dream world in which their city restored its fabulous wealth and power overnight by turning dust into gold.
