What Is the Value of Being a Generalist?
Being broad and having the ability to apply what you know in a bunch of different ways is the valuable skill. You can really only maximize your ability to be good at lots of things after you've become excellent at least one thing. There's no sort of singular definition of broader narrow, but I think it's useful to talk in specific examples. 3M has 7,000 inventors every year they make products that didn't exist five years ago. They have two classes: aeronautics and tech patenting. We have generalists who work in one or another large number of areas.
