Seneca says he doesn't have to give away his riches. The point is not to be too attached to them, and it's the anxieties of attachment that he really counts again. He certainly was a very rich man. Some of the allegations about how he used his money are very much allegations from hostile sources. Tacitus stopped advising Nero. Nero lost the sturdy and influential and importantly good friend.
