The Fourth Gospel - What Is the Historical Context?

The Dead Sea Scrolls have sparked a renewed interest in the Jewish background of the fourth gospel. There is also an interest today in reconstructing the social realities presupposed by the gospel. Many scholars do not ask questions about John's historical trustworthiness or sources, but how to make sense of the text as it stands.
