I Don't Care, but I Do Care and People Like Me Care
The Christian worldview has shaped western society such that all of our intuitions, even these good intuitions, that we don't want to be cruel towards animals are very much grounded in a sort of theistic worldview. Dr. Singer's response might be, but I do care and people like me care. And so yeah, I don't have to justify it to you. But on your worldview, I can't see why it matters.
