Is Pure Math Relevant to Reality?
There's this claim that in pure physics, oh, sorry, not pure physics theoretical physics and pure math, that eventually today's abstractions are tomorrow's applied. However, I find that to be a dubious claim. And the reason is that if you look at what's applied now, it almost certainly has a theoretical origin. So we can't just fund research no matter what thinking that hopefully it will have some application because in the past, anything that was applied was theoretical before.
