Marriage - A Way of Making Connections

The idea of a male breadwinner is a very recent invention. The word doesn't come into use until 1820 when we're beginning to move into wage labor. For the lower classes, it was the way that you conducted your business. Bakers tended to marry other bakers, not necessarily because they just fell in love with them but because they would be a great working partnership. Even the most personal somehow ends up connecting us to each other, to our wider communities.
