In our postmodern culture, a lot of people are uneasy with claims of truth. I think Balthasar's instinct was, especially in our world today, beginning with the beautiful is less threatening to people. Fewer hackles go up when you start with the beautiful, because all you have to do is say, look, just look at this thing.
