The History of Gin and Its Importance

Gin is a spirit and alcohol flavoured with juniper berries. It arrived in Britain in the 17th century after a Dutch liquor called Geneva was introduced. King William raised taxes on imported French brandy, making it much more expensive. The British government allowed unlicensed production of gin meaning that practically anyone could do it. By 1730, there were 7,000 gin shops which made up half of London's drinking establishments.
