When I was doing my PhD about 12 years ago I finished in sustainable development and it involved a lot of modeling. Trying to think critically about how to do this properly led me to the realization that there's no proper way of doing this because the question itself was wrong. It presupposes the kind of knowledge of a human society that is similar to what an engineer has over physical and material and non-living things. The first mistake is to think that a computer model is like a chess piece moving around which are actual human beings, he says.
