The First Amendment and the Language of Separation Church and State
Thomas Jefferson famously used the language in reference to what he called a wall of separation between church and state. This was supported by religious adherence, at least some religious adherence, not just opponents of religion. The idea that government wouldn't favor one religion over and above others would imply neutrality toward religion.
