For some, ascribing some kind of essential femininity to o'keefe's works is inescapable. But art affects us all differently and connects with us on different emotional levels. O'keefe hated that flowers were deemed feminine. Hated that she herself was praised as a woman painter due to her chosen subject matter. As she long protested, i am not a woman painter.
