In the prehistoric age, about 50 to 80 million years ago, this continent began to move rapidly northward. The northern edge of this indian plate basically struck and then burrowed under asia. This caused an enormous upwelling of the asian plate, pushing upward and creating the himalayan mountains which are still sismically active today.
