Even in the bible itself, even in the tora itself, circumcision is seen as both a practical thing to do and a metaphor. So i don't actually think it's such a big jump to say that we can look at that story and see that as symbolic,. As significant, but not necessarily having to mean that we should actually undergo the surgical procedure.
