The Purdy Shuffle - The Drum Part
Bernard purty's left foot played a crucial role in each of his drum perts with many of his grooves, rock steady. The other part that i put some work into recreating is cornel du pre's guitar part. It doesn't sound like this song is all that fast, tempo wise, but it feels fast if you're a sort of ok basist and you're trying to keep up with it. This groove really pushes forward in a way that neither cold sweat nor sissy strut did.
Drummers like Clyde Stubblefield, Zigaboo Modeliste, and Bernard Purdie defined the sound of the bands they played with not because of their flashy chops, but because they knew how to lock down a groove. On this episode, Kirk goes deep into one groove apiece by each of those drummers - Stubblefield on James Brown's "Cold Sweat," Modeliste on The Meters' "Cissy Strut," and Purdie on Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady" - with help from special guest drummer Russ Kleiner.
