The Importance of Property Rights in Privacy
When I generate data, that data belongs to me. And for anybody to come along and take it without my permission looks a lot like a property rights violation. Do you maintain ownership, even though you've sent it to me? Well, if I'm sending it over a private internet connection, it depends on what agreement I have with the internet service providers. Does copyright attach to private communications? Copyright, as far as I know, applies to any written thing. So even there, the government's treating it as property rights. We may have stumbled upon an answer to the privacy problem that obviates the use of the word 'privacy' entirely.
