CHAPTER

The Battle of Bull Run

In August 1862, Robert E. Lee's forces were riding high following their victory in the seven-days battles. After stopping McClellan's army of the Potomac from taking Richmond, they went on the move marching north. On September 15, 1862, Lee deployed 30,000 soldiers along a four-mile front behind Antietam Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Clara Barton was already an experienced child caregiver and had spent two years nursing her older brother back to health after a farm accident. And once war broke out, she rushed to help those who needed it most.
