There were enough meteorites and comets bombarding the earth early on that the oceans would have evaporated. We know probably more from mars than we do from earth, because there are craters then tos on australia. It's also a combination of throwing lots of money and bright people together and seeing what happens. And so very early on, earth became a planet whose temperature history was in no small part determined by solar radiation and the evolution of greenhouse gases.
