There was a drive to make the social sciences and the humanities authoritative forms of expert knowledge that could confront the problems of modern technical culture. By the end of the 40s by the early 1950s there was this acutely felt need for new models of what it meant to be human. And so ideas coming out of computing, digital media, cybernetics, they seemed to all be sort of promising ways of responding to these crises.
