The freelancer that says I get paid to do new things is probably somebody who's being paid by the hour or the more likely the day, like they've got a day rate and they're substituting for somebody else. They are just one step outside of an employee with none of the advantages and all of the disadvantages. If you want to move up the food chain, you want to be more strategic,. You want to not rely on hourly billing or low level billing, lower level billing. This is an opportunity. The only time I can think of when it's not an authority building move is when it's so obvious that they want to stay in that area.
