Gel: Edison thought of most of the work going on as far beyond just him and his ideas and his brain it was a team activity. In talking about technical ideas it seems like Edison really did treat everybody as equals, he says. Gel writes at one point about Upton he was trying to mathematically work out how to wind an armature. Essentially you can imagine there's a bunch of nodes and you have a wire and there's an optimal way to connect all the nodes with a wire to form some kind of pattern that's best for the job at hand.
