The Secret to a Successful Crisis Negotiation
The key to the person in crisis sort of coming down from the roof and a safe outcome is for police negotiators to lay the interactional foundations. The way they do it is by asking particular kinds of open-ended questions like, how did you get up there? These aren't questions that the people in crisis typically resist because they've already decided to do that today. It's interesting though that usually it works out. So it turns out that unlike in a TV drama, the vast majority of the time, things do work out.
