The name of Sasanians actually comes from Ardashia's mythical ancestor, Sassan. So we call them the Sasanian Persians to distinguish them from the Aquimined Persians - Alexander the Great fought against. Did they see themselves as a continuation of that empire? They didn't know, but our sources, Herodian and Cassius Dio, do see that continuation in their writing. Very much so.
