Fortresses on Sand: The History of Florida -- pt. 3

Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong

CHAPTER

Bourbon and the Civil War in Spain

In 17 38, the governor of florida granted a large plot of land two miles north of saint augustine to a company of about 100 free african people. And on this plot of land, they form a fortified town with a fortress and barracks called gracia real de santa teresa de mose. This probably reflects the early role of escaped, enslaved afAfrican people who went into the interior and took part in the formation of this confederation. So again, that was most likely already happening and well on its way by 17 50,. but we don't know much about it until later, until they start to confront and come into conflict with the european powers.
