Is There a Risk That Newer Oil Companies Will Steal Their Market Share?

I wonder if investing in traditional oil stocks has risk that newer shale companies could steal their market share. Are the traditional big guys likely to do most shale too? I don't think you have to pick between, but I just think we're going to need oil for longer than a lot of people would probably prefer. And if that's the case, then there's an awful lot of money to be made over the next 20 years still.
