Linus Torvall's project is not a for profit startup it's just they hey everybody I want to make this Unix thing run on my laptop. The promise as Clay Shrikey sort of phrased it so long ago was whoever works on this this is going to be under GPL and any effort you put in here will be a benefit to everybody. That turned out to be a great way to recruit a tremendous number of participants and we're seeing the effects of that.
