Is There an Undercurrent of Violence in the Book?

A lot of the character sticks and struggles that these characters had when they were children just to follow them through their lives or re surface. One of the things i noticed throughout the story was there was this undercurrent of violence. This is not a conscious decision that i make when i'm writing such a scene, but i think it does inform a certain reading.
