The Purest Form of Event Driven Investing

Event driven investing is basically looking for catalysts. The purest form is merger arbitrage where you bet on a deal closing or not closing an announced deal. In the 90s, I would say it was 20% IRRs. By the 2000s, when I started, it was 15, 12%. Then it was like 5, 6%. And then in COVID, it became 20. So it's a very cyclical space. It's fun watching merger ARP situations from the outside. There's actually a lot of money to be made by just what staying on the outside and waiting for the hedge funds to tilt on one side and puke a situation out of it.
