CHAPTER

Is There a Paradox Behind Adaptive Preferences?

People's preferences are adaptive to background conditions, which means they do not have a voice in their head saying, this isn't good. If we're dealing with preferences that are adaptive or partially adaptive, then it's inadequate to talk about preference falsification. Often what we're talking about is people's experiences and values, not their preferences. And i'm acutely aware that the incidente of sexual abuse in the united states of children and adults is such that the number of people in this room who've experienced it, or who've experience in their family, is a lot higher than zero.
